Hiking

Although the Paint Creek Scenic Trail Association does not maintain any hiking trails, several incomplete, but still walkable trails currently exist along the byway. Users of the Standard rail-trail are advised to be aware of posted private property along the pathway.


Ash Branch Trail

Type: In and out

Description: A gravel road that extends indefinitely for several miles up the mountain.

Directions: From Turnpike Exit 74, turn right onto Paint Creek Road. Travel 2.1 miles and turn right into Ash Branch Park. The Ash Branch Trail begins diagonally to the north across Paint Creek Road. Do not confuse the Ash Branch Trail with the nearby Danny Kitchen Nature Trail.


Danny Kitchen Nature Trail

Type: In and out

Description: A short walk for a few hundred yards through the forest along Ash Branch.

Directions: From Turnpike Exit 74, turn right onto Paint Creek Road. Travel 2.1 miles and turn right into Ash Branch Park. The Danny Kitchen Nature Trail begins at the sign opposite the park entrance across Paint Creek Road.



Standard Rail-Trail

Type: In and out

Description: An unofficial rail-trail connecting Standard and Mahan.

Directions: From Turnpike Exit 74, turn left onto Paint Creek Road. Travel 3/4 mile into the town of Standard. The rail-trail begins on the left at an old bridge as soon as you enter Standard.



Plum Orchard Lake WMA

Description: Offers hiking along trails and old logging roads

Directions: From Mossy Exit 60: Heading into Mossy, cross over the bridge, then make a right at the intersection. Turn right onto Paint Creek Road and travel for 3 miles. Turn left at the sign for Plum Orchard Lake and travel one mile.From Pax Exit 54: Turn left onto Paint Creek road and travel for 3 miles. Turn right at the sign for Plum Orchard Lake and travel one mile.
