In this cemetery are buried family members of Pax’s earliest white settlers. One of the oldest graves is that of Lewis Humphrey, son of William Humphrey. William Humphrey was a surveyor and came from the New River area. Much of the lands surrounding Paint Creek came under his ownership. Son Lewis Humphrey inherited much of the land which was sold to developers for the town of Paintsville. Lewis’ son, George Humphrey, built the earliest bank and town hall in Pax’s commercial district. The town of Pax has grown up around this family cemetery. The Humphrey family and ancestors still remain in the area maintaining a strong connection to the land and place despite changes in the economy and relocations. Special community events such as the Pax Reunion attract thousands of former residents who make the trip home to renew friendships and affirm connections to place and family. |
