Located south of Pax this farmhouse is known to the locals as the “Davis Farm”. It stands in contrast to coal camp communities which surround it. Local farmers experienced a relatively affluent lifestyle in comparison to their coal mining neighbors. There are sizable outbuildings present on the property, although many have probably been demolished due to improvements in storage and refrigeration. The smokehouse, root cellar, and areas set aside for cold storage demonstrate methods of food preservation in the past. Agriculture may represent a much more diversified economic life. Culturally the farmers were a group more closely affiliated with landownership and were relatively more affluent and economically independent than the tenant miners who occupied the mining communities nearby. ike. |
