This trailhead is at the beginning of 14 miles of rail-to-trail starting in Standard and ending in Westerly. The project was funded by a $300,000 Transportation Enhancement grant funding secured for the acquisition of the abandoned rail bed which parallels Paint Creek. This historic rail corridor passes through communities which played a major role in the export of Paint Creek’s most valuable mineral resource, coal. By using the wealth of historic stories and the abundance of recreational opportunities along Paint Creek visitors are brought into contact with these community resources and provide people with choices and alternative methods of transportation. This rail-trail corridor closely parallels Paint Creek, paved county roads, and the West Virginia Turnpike. |
