This house is a good example of the coal company houses found in the community of Willis Branch. It has experienced very little alteration aside from the replacement of roof shingles and addition of vinyl replacement windows since its construction, which is estimated to be around 1910. Typically, the interiors of most coal company houses in this region were finished with plaster. Berwind White Coal Mining Company, the coal company operating in this community, finished the interior of these houses with beadboard making these particular structures unique. At its height, there were 75 tenement houses in the community, a $10,000 store building, a post office, and the mine shaft fitted with the very latest and best mining machinery of the time. Weirwood consisted of 380-foot mine shaft with at least half a million dollars being spent to make it one of the model mines of the region. |
